The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) was established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulation, 2011, regulates the registration and licensing of food businesses in India.
All Food Business Operators (FBO) must have an FSSAI Registration or FSSAI license if they are involved in storing, manufacturing, distributing, or transportation of food products. FSSAI is the legal authority that issues FSSAI registration or license to all the food business operators in India based on their size and nature.
FSSAI (i.e. Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) is an institution that oversees and controls the food trade in our country. It makes sure that the food products are subjected to multiple quality inspections thereby diminishing the food deterioration as well as the sale of inferior merchandise. It is accountable for the recording as well as licensing of the FBO (Food Business Operators) in India and it advances the standards and principles for operating the food business in India.
The certification plus permission for food business in our country is administered by the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food businesses) Regulation, 2011. According to this regulation, each food business administrator in India is needed to have an FSSAI registration or license in case they are occupied in the production, depository, conveyance or circulation, and dispersion of food products. As per the intensity as well as the type of business, FSSAI registration or FSSAI license might be needed.
